Fully Automated Teachers: Future Fact or Science Fiction?

Fully Automated Teachers: Future Fact or Science Fiction?

Dec 12, 2017

With schools facing a chronic teacher shortage and machine learning moving at an exponential pace, some tech experts predict Artificial Intelligence and robots will soon play a large role in how we teach and manage students. But how large a role?

“HAL, can I please use the bathroom?”

“I’m sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t let you do that.”

Will Artificial Intelligence be the bane of terrified students in the near future? One British educator and futurist thinks the possibility isn’t as remote as we might think (if we think about AI and job automation at all). Amid general fears of job automation, Sir Anthony Seldon says teachers (and tutors) face the looming prospect of being replaced by robots. By 2027 to be exact.

The picture is more complicated than that, though.

Tech experts think there are areas in and out of the classroom where AI and robots could improve the learning process and relieve teachers of some of the usual workplace stresses. “Well-deployed AI could materially assist us,” adds Arizona State University Associate Professor Michael Bennett, “by augmenting individuals' and communities' decision-making capacities.”

What say you: Can AI ultimately replace the human teacher?
